Winter Solstice

Winter Solstice: Reflection, Tarot & Soul Nourishment

Winter Solstice arrives in Queensland, Australia, on Sunday 21 June 2026 at approximately 12:24 pm AEST.

For those of us in the Southern Hemisphere, Winter Solstice marks the shortest day and longest night of the year this Sunday, the 21st of June at approximately 12:24pm AEST.  While we are still in the thick of winter, this turning point signifies the promise of longer days and shorter nights.

For thousands of years, cultures around the world have honoured the solstice as a sacred threshold – a moment to pause, reflect and acknowledge the eternal cycle of light and darkness.  Ancient peoples observed the movement of the sun and the stars, celebrating the sacred cycles, and recognized that even in the time of deepest darkness creation was evolving.

Spiritually, Winter Solstice reminds us that rest is productive.  That it is in the void, the place of darkness and stillness, that all life began.  Nature is not dormant because it has given up or simply gone to sleep, never to wake from its slumber, it is conserving its energy, gathering strength and preparing for new growth.

The same is true for us.

Sometimes the answers are not to be found in doing more.

Sometimes they are found in stillness.

THE GIFT HIDDEN WITHIN THE DARKNESS

Modern life often encourages us to keep moving, producing, striving. To ignore the natural cycles and rhythms of life.

Winter Solstice invites something different.

It asks us to slow down and make space for:

·       What needs to be acknowledged.

·       What wisdom has patiently been waiting for our attention.

·       What we are being called to release.

·       What we are being called to nurture.

·       What dreams have been quietly waiting for us in the darkness.

This darkness is not something to be feared.

It is fertile ground – the place where all creation begins.

A WINTER SOLSTICE RITUAL

Set aside 30-60minutes where you won’t be disturbed.

Gather:

·       A black candle

·       A piece of Black Moonstone

·       A cup of your favourite herbal tea

·       Your tarot or oracle deck

·       A journal and pen

·       A cosy blanket and cushion if desired

Step 1: Light the Candle

As you light your candle, take several slow breaths to ground yourself.

Reflect on the flame.

Notice how even the smallest light can transform darkness.  Notice how even the smallest flame can cast a long shadow.

Ask yourself:

·       What light exists within me that I may have forgotten?

·       What light am I willing to nurture?

·       What light am I willing to share with the world?

·       What ember within me is ready to be fanned and encouraged to grow with the lengthening days?

Step 2:  Connect with the Black Moonstone

Hold your Black Moonstone in your hands and ask: “What am I being invited to trust right now?”

Site quietly with your crystal and notice any thoughts, feelings, or insights that may arise.

BLACK MOONSTONE METAPHYSICAL MEANINGS

Black Moonstone is often associated with:

·       Intuition and inner knowing

·       New beginnings

·       Emotional balance

·       Protection and grounding during periods of change

·       Working with the unseen and unknown

·       Trusting the cycles of life.

Like the Winter Solstice itself, Black Moonstone reminds us that transformation often happens beneath the surface before it becomes visible in our outer world.

Step 3: Sip Your Tea

Prepare a warming herbal tea of your choice.

As you hold the cup, notice its warmth.

With each sip, imagine warmth and nourishment spreading through your body.

Allow the tea to become a symbol of the hopes, dreams, and intentions you are nurturing for the seasons ahead.

As you drink, reflect:

"What within me is ready to be gently nourished?"

"What dream is asking for my patience rather than my urgency?"

Final Thoughts

Winter Solstice reminds us that growth is not always visible.

Sometimes the most important work happens beneath the surface.

As the longest night gives way to the gradual return of the light, may you find comfort in stillness, wisdom in reflection, and trust in the quiet unfolding of what is yet to come.

You don't need to force your way into your next chapter.

You can listen your way there.
