"We spend so much of our lives learning to listen to everyone else—the expectations of family, the demands of work, the opinions of friends, the endless noise of the world around us. Rarely are we taught how to listen to ourselves."

Perhaps that is why so many people feel disconnected.

Not because they have lost themselves, but because they can no longer hear themselves.

Clients quite often ask me to reveal to them what their purpose is.

Perhaps before we ask, "What is my purpose?" we first need to ask, "Am I living in alignment with myself?"

Because...

We cannot align with a life we cannot hear.

Purpose and Alignment – What's the Difference?

Purpose and alignment are closely connected, but they are not the same thing.

Purpose is often thought of as our calling or the contribution we make to the world. It can feel like a destination we are trying to discover, something that will suddenly become clear one day.

Alignment is different.

Alignment is how we choose to meet each day. It is the quiet feeling of living in a way that is true to who we are, even in life's ordinary moments.

Purpose asks:

"What am I here to do?"

Alignment asks:

"How am I choosing to live today?"

The beautiful thing is that purpose often reveals itself through a life lived in alignment. It isn't always found through searching harder. More often, it emerges as we begin listening more deeply.

When We Drift Away From Ourselves

Life is busy.

There are responsibilities to meet, people to care for, deadlines to keep and countless distractions competing for our attention.

Without realising it, we can begin living almost entirely from our minds—planning, solving, organising and reacting.

Over time, we become disconnected from the quieter parts of ourselves.

Many of us become so accustomed to living with stress that we no longer recognise it as stress.

It simply becomes normal.

The tight shoulders.

The clenched jaw.

The racing thoughts.

The restless sleep.

The feeling that we are always "on."

Our bodies are remarkably wise. Long before our minds acknowledge that something is out of balance, our bodies often begin whispering for our attention.

Persistent muscle tension, headaches, difficulty switching off, poor sleep, fatigue or simply feeling disconnected can all be gentle invitations to pause and pay attention. Rather than seeing these experiences as something to push through, perhaps they are asking us to listen more closely to ourselves.

Returning to yourself isn't another task to complete.

It is an act of kindness.

Returning to Yourself

It is difficult to hear your own inner wisdom when your nervous system is constantly preparing for the next thing.

When we live in a prolonged state of stress, our awareness narrows. We react rather than respond. We lose touch with our intuition, our creativity and our natural sense of clarity.

Returning to yourself doesn't mean escaping life.

It means creating enough space to experience it differently.

Not because you need to become more productive.

Not because you should be coping better.

But because this is where alignment begins.

Creating Space to Listen

Meditation is often misunderstood.

Many people believe the goal is to stop thinking.

In reality, meditation invites us to become aware of our thoughts without becoming caught up in every one of them.

To simply notice.

To observe.

To breathe.

As we sit quietly, even for just a few minutes, something begins to soften.

We notice the stories we repeatedly tell ourselves.

We become aware of the tension we have been carrying.

We begin to recognise what genuinely nourishes us and what quietly drains us.

The goal is not to empty the mind.

The goal is to become familiar with it.

From that awareness comes choice.

From choice comes freedom.

And from freedom comes alignment.

Small Practices That Help You Return

You don't need an hour-long morning routine to reconnect with yourself.

Alignment is cultivated through small moments of intentional awareness.

Perhaps it begins with taking three slow breaths before getting out of bed.

Perhaps it's enjoying your morning cup of tea without reaching for your phone.

Perhaps it's sitting quietly for five minutes and simply noticing your breath.

Perhaps it's spending a few moments in nature at the end of your day, allowing your shoulders to soften and your thoughts to settle.

Or perhaps it's placing your hand on your heart and gently asking:

"How am I, really?"

These simple practices are not about doing more.

They are about creating enough stillness to hear yourself again.

A Simple Three-Card Tarot Spread: Returning to Alignment

  1. Where have I become disconnected from myself?

  2. What is asking for my attention right now?

  3. What small step will help me return to alignment?

Allow your cards to become a conversation rather than a prediction. Listen for what quietly resonates within you.

Journal Reflection

Rather than asking yourself:

"What is my purpose?"

Try asking:

  • Where do I feel most like myself?

  • What has my body been trying to tell me lately?

  • When do I feel most peaceful and present?

  • What is one small choice I can make today that honours who I truly am?

Purpose may unfold over a lifetime.

Alignment begins with the very next breath.

Awareness invites us to notice.

Presence invites us to stay.

Reverence changes how we meet life.

Alignment is what naturally follows.

If you're seeking deeper clarity, guidance or support on your journey, I'd be honoured to walk alongside you.
